Makers’ Heroes

Do you know someone who has made an impact with their charity knitting, crochet or sewing? Nominate them as a Makers' Hero.

If selected, we will celebrate their good works in our newsletter and social media, and also send them a care package including one of our Makers' Heroes Drawstring Bags.

May 11, 2021  |  Barb Demorest

We want to thank Barb for taking time to share her story with us last Tuesday at Makers' Nite - she certainly knows how to inspire us all to contribute our time and talents to help others. We are delighted to celebrate Barb and Knitted Knockers as today's Makers' Hero!

Barb will receive the much-coveted Makers' Hero project bag, and we are making a $500.00 donation to Knitted Knockers to help offset the costs of shipping hand knit and crocheted breast prosthetics to those in need.

We applaud each person who has worked to brighten the day of another person, and are so grateful for the work that Barb and her team does to ensure that every person who reaches out is able to receive the items they need.

April 20, 2021  |  Laura Gile

Laura has made well over 50 blankets for Project Linus and Warm up America thus far and continues to joyfully make up more. Honestly, she's lost accurate count, so we're using a conservative estimate. She has also made 10 shawls for Saber Nursing Home in Ohio. Earlier in her life, she spent her career serving as a NICU nurse for kiddos with heart issues. Laura is also recovering from her own health issues using her craft as therapy for, as she says, "her poor brain". She inspires all the members of Sonoran Hookers week after week with her indomitable spirit.

A note from thhe Sonoran Hookers group:

"We love our Laura and, if possible, even more on her "bad" days when it takes her a little longer to convey her thoughts because this lady does not know the meaning of the word quit."

April 13, 2021  |  Eileen Adler

When Eileen's dear friend died from breast cancer, she decided to write up a pattern for "Softies," and head up an effort to donate them to women who wanted soft, knitted, light weight prostheses.

Her efforts have resulted in hundreds and hundreds of pairs of "Softies" being donated for free to anyone who wants them and at the breast cancer charity walks. When she was faced with the heavy and often overwhelming difficulties of caring for a husband with Parkinson's, she started a website that sends out a link to a new webpage each week with words of wisdom and inspiration on her website, eileenadler.com.

Your work to help others is inspiring to us! We are delighted to celebrate you as a hero, and send you a Makers' Heroes project bag full of CoBaSi to make more softies for those in need.

March 26, 2021  |  Judith Magarinos

Judith is the consummate charity knitter. She is very prolific and her charity for the last 2 years has been Vine Maple Place in maple valley, Washington. She sends boxes to a friend who delivers them when they volunteer. We love seeing people who use their talents to help others. Thank you, Judith!

We are sending you a care package full of yarn and goodies as a way for us to say thank you for all you do. Of course, you are also getting the Makers' Heroes project bag because YOU are a hero!

March 9, 2021  |  Christine Zabloudil

For more then 30 years, Christine worked as a neonatal nurse in the intensive care nursery at Valley Medical Center. Since she worked with many prematurely born infants, one thing she started doing was knitting miniature stocking caps in preemie sizes, and small blankets that the mothers could take with them after they left the hospital. In Christine's 30 year career as a neonatal nurse, she probably knitted "thousands" of preemie caps and blankets for the most at-risk babies in the hospital.

Christine, we salute you for your lifetime of work helping others, both through your skills as a nurse and your talents as a knitter. Thank you for all you do to make this world a brighter place.

We are sending you a care package with some wonderfully soft yarns to make more sweet preemie caps, as well as the much-coveted Makers' Heroes project bag. Again, thank you!

March 5, 2021  |  Pamela tourtillott

Pamela has crocheted over 670 teddy bears in less than 3 years donating them to Mother Bear Project that send the bears to children in Africa, mostly orphans. Besides the cost of the yarn and stuffing, it costs her about $5 for postage to ship the bears to Mother Bear headquarters, and to pay for them to be shipped to Africa.

She started making the bears when she retired, and has continued making them throughought several setbacks, her husband having a stroke and both her husband and her going to the hospital with Covid-19.

We salute you, Pamela! Your efforts to help children affected by HIV/AIDS in developing nations is inspiring. Thank you for using your time and talents to help others.

We will be sending Pamela a care package with lots of fun yarns and goodies that she can use to keep making bears.

February 9, 2021  |  Perry Yarusso

Perry Yarusso has been helping his mother make masks, which they hang on a "Mask Tree!" Everone is free to take one - and donations are accepted, but not required. In December, he collected enough money to donate 3399 meal bags to his local food bank!

What an amazing young man! We are proud to call him our HERO!

February 2, 2021  |  Jean Robson

We are delighted at the number of nominations we have received in the past few days for our Makers' Heroes award. Today's honor goes to Jean Robson

Charon Coonfield nominated Jean as an unsung hero for all the baby blankets, hats, throws, and chemo caps she has made for friends, family and others over many years.

January 19, 2021  |  KANG (Knit at night gang)  |  Houston, TX

We want to give a special shout out to the Knit at Night Guild (KANG) in Houston, Texas for all the items they made and donated for the residents of Hackberry and Johnson Bayou, Louisiana. Their handmade items were distributed at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church (which was in repairs from the storm), Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, and Angel Tree for those in need nearby communities. Their creative crafting and caring gesture brought a bright spot to a tough situation. The Guild members are awesome, and they continue to do this great work while having fun and supporting local shops.

Thank you, Knit at Night Guild, for all you do to make our world a better place. You are our heroes! We will be sending you a care package so that you may continue to knit hats and shawls for those who need them!
